Kolkata, 2 July (H.S.) —

West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar has filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court, accusing the state police of repeatedly harassing him in recent weeks. The court has granted permission to register the case, and the matter is expected to come up for hearing this week before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh.

Majumdar’s counsel told the court that his client had been unfairly targeted by the police on several occasions. Citing two recent incidents in Budge Budge and Kasba, the lawyer alleged that the police not only disrupted peaceful political demonstrations but also took Majumdar into custody without justification. Despite writing to Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma regarding the matter, no response was received, the lawyer claimed.

The BJP has alleged that the ruling Trinamool Congress government is using police forces to suppress the opposition and intimidate leaders like Majumdar. On June 19, the BJP leader had visited Budge Budge in South 24 Parganas to meet an injured party worker. According to the BJP, his convoy was stopped, and when he attempted to walk to the destination, he was attacked with bricks, stones, and shoes. Majumdar later raised the matter with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, questioning the role of the police.

In another recent incident on Saturday, the BJP staged a protest at Gariahat crossing in Kolkata against the alleged rape incident at a law college in Kasba. The police reportedly attempted to stop the protest, leading to clashes between party workers and security forces. Majumdar was detained during the demonstration. From the Lalbazar police lockup, he released an audio message stating, “In the past month, police have picked me up four times from the streets and released me on bail bonds.”
