Delhi, 2 July (H.S.): The domestic stock market closed in the red today after experiencing daily fluctuations. Initially, trading began with gains as buying support lifted both the Sensex and Nifty indices. However, profit booking quickly led to a downturn, with the Sensex finishing down 0.34 percent and the Nifty down 0.35 percent. Selling pressure was predominant across public sector enterprises, real estate, and banking stocks. Additionally, capital goods, FMCG, and oil and gas indices also ended lower. Contrarily, automobile, metal, and pharmaceutical stocks saw continuous buying, and IT, consumer durables, and tech indices performed well. The broader market suffered as the BSE mid-cap index declined by 0.18 percent and the small-cap index dropped by 0.20 percent. Overall, the market's weakness resulted in a decrease of approximately 50 thousand crores in investors' wealth, lowering the market capitalization of BSE-listed companies to 460.76 lakh crores.

During trading, 4,171 shares were actively traded on the BSE; 1,809 shares closed higher while 2,205 declined, and 157 remained unchanged. On the NSE, 2,649 shares were traded, with 1,052 gaining and 1,597 losing. Among the 30 stocks in the Sensex, 14 rose while 16 fell, and in the Nifty, 23 ended in green versus 27 in red. The Sensex opened at 83,790.72 points, reaching a high of 83,935.01 points before dropping sharply due to selling pressure. By the day's end, it closed at 83,409.69 points. Similarly, the Nifty opened at 25,588.30 points, reaching 25,608.10 points before falling to 25,378.75 points but rebounding slightly to finish at 25,453.40 points. Top gainers included Tata Steel and JSW Steel, while Shriram Finance and HDFC Life were among the notable losers.
