New Delhi, July 2(HS): Investigations into sudden unexplained deaths in India reveal no direct link to COVID-19 vaccinations. Studies by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) indicate that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective, with very rare serious side effects. Sudden cardiac deaths can arise from various factors, such as genetics, lifestyle, pre-existing conditions, and post-COVID complications.

To analyze sudden unexplained deaths, particularly in individuals aged 18 to 45, ICMR and NCDC conducted two studies: one retrospective and one prospective. The first study, by ICMR’s National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), titled “Factors Associated with Unexplained Sudden Deaths Among Adults Aged 18-45 Years in India,” took place from May to August 2023 across various hospitals. It studied individuals who unexpectedly died between October 2021 and March 2023, concluding that vaccination does not increase risk.

The second study, “Establishing the Cause in Sudden Unexplained Deaths in Young,” conducted by AIIMS, New Delhi, focused on identifying common causes of sudden deaths in young adults. Preliminary data suggest heart attacks remain the main cause of sudden death, with no shift in patterns from previous years. Genetic mutations were noted as potential contributors in many unexplained cases.

These studies enhance the understanding of sudden unexplained deaths in young adults, reinforcing that COVID-19 vaccination does not elevate risk. Experts emphasize that claims linking vaccinations to sudden deaths lack scientific support and could hinder vaccine confidence. The Government of India prioritizes evidence-based health research to ensure citizens' well-being.
