West Bengal, 2 July (H.S.) The Border Security Force (BSF) foiled an infiltration attempt at India-Bangladesh border late Tuesday night and shot dead a Bangladeshi smuggler near Gede Haldarpada Border Out Post (BOP), under the jurisdiction of the 32nd Battalion in the Krishnaganj area of Nadia district.
According to BSF sources, a number of Bangladeshi smugglers were attempting to cross the border into Indian territory in darkness. When noticed, BSF jawans tried to intercept the group. In response, the smugglers opened fire on the jawans. The BSF also retaliated in self-defense. After the the smugglers fled the scene.
During a subsequent search operation, the body of a youth with bullet injuries was recovered from the area. He was taken to Krishnaganj Rural Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Initial BSF assessments suggest the smuggler died from gunshot wounds. The body has been sent for post-mortem. It is suspected that other smugglers involved may have sustained injuries as well.
Efforts are underway to establish the identity of the deceased.
