Bhubaneswar, 2 July (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts in Odisha as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas intensifies, bringing the possibility of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the next 72 hours.
According to the IMD, the active weather system is likely to result in widespread rain, lightning, and strong surface winds across many parts of the state. The districts of Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar have been placed under an orange alert for today, with forecasts predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 km/h.
The weather agency has cautioned residents about the potential for localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions to transportation and normal activities due to the intense weather conditions.
In addition to the orange alert, a yellow warning has been issued for Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Bargarh, signaling a moderate risk of strong rainfall and thunderstorms, and advising the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
