London, July 2 (H.S.): French Open 2025 champion Coco Gauff, faced a shocking exit in the first round of Wimbledon, losing to unseeded Ukrainian Diana Yastremska in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-1. The match occurred on Court No. 1 late Tuesday. Gauff is only the third woman in the Open Era to be ousted in the first round after winning the French Open, joining Justine Henin (2005) and Francesca Schiavone (2010). Gauff's performance was dismal, tallying just six winners alongside 29 unforced errors, nine of which were double faults.
Conversely, Yastremska showcased dominance with 16 winners. Gauff, who recently won her second Grand Slam at Roland Garros and triumphed at the 2023 US Open, continues to struggle on grass courts, unable to advance beyond the first round at Wimbledon for the second time in three years. Yastremska secured her first victory over Gauff, having lost their previous meetings.
The 42nd-ranked Yastremska said, “I was in great rhythm today. Playing against Coco is special in itself.” Yastremska recently reached the finals of a grass court tournament in Nottingham, which boosted her confidence.
She stated, “Two days I trained on grass and straight away went to the finalsin Nottingham. So it was pretty unexpected, but I think it was a great (grass) season for me with some great matches.
“I’m enjoying being on the court and I love playing on grass. I feel like this year we are kind of friends, so I hope the road will continue for me here. It’s a pleasure being here”
With this victory, Yastremska not only achieved a significant upset but also gave her campaign in the tournament a new lease of life. It will be interesting to see how far she can go from here.
