Chennai, 2 July (H.S.): The Chennai Police Commissioner, A. Arun, has expressed his appreciation for the Anti-Narcotic Intelligence Unit (ANIU) team for their outstanding work in busting a major drug cartel. The ANIU team, formed by Commissioner Arun in July last year, has been instrumental in detecting and dismantling synthetic drug peddling networks in the city. In the last five months of 2024, the team has busted 50 such networks and arrested 2,117 individuals in over 700 cases.
The ANIU team made a significant breakthrough towards the end of 2024, seizing ₹17 crore worth of methamphetamine and arresting 10 people, including three members of the 'Chennai Cartel'. This major drug bust is a testament to the team's dedication and hard work in tackling the growing menace of synthetic drugs in the city. The police have also seized large quantities of other narcotics, including ganja, ketamine, heroin, cocaine, LSD, and MDMA tablets.
The Chennai Police Commissioner praised the ANIU team for their efforts in keeping the city safe from the scourge of drugs. The team's work has led to the detention of 300 accused under the Goondas Act in 2024 alone, highlighting the severity of the issue. With the ANIU team's continued efforts, the Chennai Police are committed to making the city a safer place for its residents.
