Hooghly, 2 July (H.S.): Hooghly Organizational District unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) submitted a memorandum to Hooghly-Chinsurah Municipality, demanding proper basic civic amenities for local residents and timely payment of wages to casual workers.
Earlier, BJP workers took out a rally from Pipulpati crossing at around 11:30 AM and marched towards the municipality office. They were stopped by the police at the main gate, leading to a heated exchange between BJP workers and the police. Following the confrontation, BJP workers staged a sit-in protest in front of the municipality gate.
Meanwhile, a BJP delegation met the chairman and submitted the memorandum. After the meeting, BJP leaders came out and offered chocolates to the casual workers who had been staging a sit-in at the gate for several days, demanding timely wages. The BJP leaders assured the workers of their support and solidarity in their ongoing struggle.
Suresh Shaw, General Secretary of the BJP's Hooghly Organizational District, said, We have given the municipality a 72-hour ultimatum to resolve the issues. If the demands are not met within the stipulated time, the BJP will intensify its agitation.
