Bhubaneswar, 18 July (H.S.): Ravenshaw University has rescinded an order that restricted female faculty, staff, and students from remaining on campus after 5:30 PM. The controversial directive, issued on July 17, was withdrawn the following day amid widespread criticism.
The original notice, signed by the university Registrar on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, cited safety concerns as the reason for the restriction. It stated:
No female faculty, staff, and students are permitted to remain in the workplace or on campus after 5:30 PM. This decision will remain in place until a formal Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) is issued, which will outline the necessary guidelines and protocols for work hours and safety measures.
Following backlash from students, faculty members, and civil society, the university promptly revoked the order. Sources within the administration confirmed that a new, gender-neutral Standard Operating Procedure is being developed to enhance campus safety for all members of the university community.
The revised guidelines are expected to include comprehensive measures to address security concerns without imposing discriminatory restrictions based on gender.
