Imphal, 18 July (HS): In a decisive clampdown on militant extortion activities, Manipur security forces arrested two rebels of banned outfits in two separate operations in last 24 hours.

The first breakthrough came when Thokchom Yoihenba Singh, alias Wangba/Lion, was nabbed from Thinungei Mamang Paton in Bishnupur district. A 21-year-old rebel of the outlawed People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), Singh had undergone a month-long basic military training at Kakching Khunou.

According to investigators, Singh had launched an aggressive extortion drive, targeting pharmacies, schools, government institutions, and professionals in Bishnupur and Imphal. Police disclosed that he had already extorted ₹1 lakh, which he transferred to his handler in the outfit. A mobile phone with two SIM cards was seized from him.

Just before some time, Imphal East police apprehended 26-year-old Sorokhaibam Pari Singh alias Ibungo near Keikol Police Post, along Koirengei Awang Potshangbam Road. He is linked to the National Revolutionary Front of Manipur (NRFM) outfit.

Hailing from Senjam Chirang Mayai Leikai in Imphal West, Ibungo played a key role in abducting individuals for ransom, transporting arms, and facilitating movement of NRFM cadres across the valley. During his arrest, a mobile phone and wallet were recovered.

The twin arrests mark a significant disruption in extortion rackets that have long plagued the region’s peace and business environment. -----
