Chennai, 18 July (H.S.): The recent Swachh Survekshan rankings have placed Chennai at 104, sparking widespread discontent among city officials. Chennai Deputy Mayor, who oversees several civic functions, has questioned the fairness of the ranking, citing discrepancies in the assessment process. According to the Deputy Mayor, the city's sanitation infrastructure and waste management systems have undergone significant improvements in recent years, making the low ranking hard to justify.
The Deputy Mayor pointed out that several factors, including data collection methods and citizen feedback mechanisms, might have contributed to the city's poor showing. We have made considerable investments in enhancing the city's cleanliness and waste management. The ranking does not reflect the actual ground reality, the Deputy Mayor said. The civic body is planning to review the assessment report and submit a detailed representation to the authorities, highlighting the perceived shortcomings in the evaluation process.
The Swachh Survekshan rankings aim to encourage cities to improve their cleanliness and sanitation standards. However, the ranking methodology has come under scrutiny, with several cities questioning its accuracy. Chennai's ranking has raised concerns among residents and officials alike, who feel that the city's efforts to improve cleanliness and waste management have not been given due recognition. The city administration is determined to appeal the ranking and work towards a more accurate assessment in future surveys.
