East Burdwan, 17 July (H.S.) Ahead of 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, a so-called Purification Drive initiated by a key affiliate organization of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has sent shockwaves through the party's leadership in East Burdwan district. The campaign is aimed at cleaning up the party's image by confronting its own leaders with confidential information about their personal lives, assets, and activities, right at their doorstep.

According to sources, the agency has compiled detailed dossiers on leaders at every level of the party. These include data on land holdings, financial assets, close links with contractors, and even where certain leaders secretly reside. When this information is presented directly to the concerned leaders during surprise visits, most are reportedly left stunned and speechless.

A recent example comes from Tayana area in East Burdwan district where a TMC leader there tried to impress the visiting team with tales of his dedication to the party. At the same time one of the representatives asked, “Don’t you have a luxurious house in Burdwan? Isn’t that where you stay at night?” The leader was left visibly shaken, as knowledge of the house was limited to a tight inner circle.

Such encounters are becoming increasingly common. From block-level leaders to zonal presidents, representatives from the agency are visiting with detailed profiles and issuing stern warnings: “It’s time to clean up your act, or your future in the party will be bleak.”

Political observers said the campaign is a strategic move by TMC to distance itself from internal corruption and opulence among some of its leaders.

Party insiders suggest that the 'purification drive' is not merely about issuing warnings. It’s also part of the groundwork for selecting candidates for the 2026 elections. During interactions, representatives are asking leaders, “Who do you think should be the candidate in your area?” If any leader jokes about nominating himself, he are promptly reminded of their own controversial history, point by point.
