Dhaka, July 17 (H.S.): Violence erupted during the National Citizen Party's (NCP) March to Gopalganj rally, resulting in at least four fatalities and multiple injuries, which prompted local authorities to impose Section 144 and an overnight curfew. The situation escalated during the day, marked by clashes between party supporters and police, arson, and reports of gunfire. In an effort to regain control, security forces were deployed, including Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) units and military vehicles.
Prior to the rally, a police vehicle was set ablaze, and an attack was made on the Upazila Nirbahi Officer's (UNO) vehicle. NCP leaders accused supporters of the ruling Awami League, referred to as Mujib loyalists, of orchestrating the violence intended to disrupt their movement. The confrontations began in the morning and intensified by early afternoon as NCP supporters attempted to reach Madaripur under police and military escort.
Witnesses reported a chaotic scene in Gopalganj, characterized by loud explosions and the use of tear gas as security tried to disperse aggressive crowds. The response from the local administration included the shutdown of shops and a ban on public gatherings. Four individuals were confirmed dead at Gopalganj General Hospital, with numerous others injured, leading NCP leaders to demand nationwide protests and immediate arrests of those responsible.
The rally, part of the NCP's nationwide campaign that commenced on July 1, had been highly anticipated, with social media abuzz with promotional content. However, tension escalated as police patrolled the area amid security concerns.
In subsequent attacks, NCP leaders faced further violence during their convoy to Madaripur. Hundreds reportedly targeted their procession with sticks, creating significant disruptions. Following the violent incidents, police escorted NCP leaders to safety, and video footage of their evacuation in armored vehicles circulated widely.
As violence continued, local authorities imposed Section 144 and instituted a curfew from 8 PM to the following afternoon. The violence resulted in a chaotic atmosphere in Gopalganj, with ongoing clashes leaving the area in turmoil, prompting calls for political accountability and civil mobilization among the NCP and its supporters.
