West Bengal, 16 July (H.S.): Sanjay Roy, convicted in the infamous RG Kar Medical College case, has filed an appeal in the Calcutta High Court seeking complete acquittal. The High Court has accepted his petition. Roy, a civic volunteer, was earlier sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court after being found guilty in the case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which probed the matter, had filed a separate appeal in the High Court demanding the death penalty for Sanjay Roy. In response, Roy has now challenged the CBI’s plea by filing his own petition seeking to overturn his conviction entirely.

On Wednesday, a division bench comprising Justice Mohammad Shabbar Rashidi and Justice Debangsu Basak announced that both the CBI’s appeal and Sanjay Roy’s petition will be heard together. The hearings are scheduled to begin in September.
