Bhubaneswar, 16 July (H.S.) The Odisha government has intensified its legal response in the tragic death of a Fakir Mohan (FM) College student, with serious charges including abetment of suicide now added to the case. The move comes following the student's death, which has sparked public outcry and demands for accountability.
Addressing the media, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari confirmed that the original charges have been revised in light of the student’s demise. “Since the student has lost her life, the previous sections have been modified. Now, charges related to abetment of suicide and causing severe mental trauma have been added to the FIR,” he said.
Minister Pujari also emphasized that the investigation will not be restricted to the college principal and head of department. “Anyone who played a role in instigating or failing to act will come under the purview of the investigation. The government is committed to ensuring justice for the victim and her family,” he stated.
A high-level meeting was convened at the State Secretariat, chaired by senior leadership including two Deputy Chief Ministers, BJP state president, and several key ministers such as Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, Health Minister, Transport Minister, and senior BJP legislator Jay Narayan Mishra.
Following the meeting, Law Minister Harichandan reiterated the government’s stance on accountability. “Legal proceedings are underway as per the Chief Minister’s directives. Stringent action will be taken against all individuals found responsible. Additionally, steps will be taken to prevent such incidents from recurring in educational institutions across the state,” he said.
The case continues to draw widespread attention, with growing calls for institutional reforms and greater mental health support for students.
