Three dead as mud house collapses in Purulia due to heavy rainfall

Purulia, 15 July (H.S.): Three people lost their lives and three others were injured when a mud house collapsed due to continuous heavy rainfall in the Shabortola area of Ramai Garh-1 Gram Panchayat in Purulia district of West Bengal.

According to local sources, six members of the same family were living in the house. Ongoing heavy rain over the past few days had softened the ground significantly. On Monday night, due to excessive rainfall, the mud house suddenly collapsed while the family members were asleep inside.

Three people died on the spot after being buried under the debris, while the other three were rescued in critical condition. Upon receiving the information, the police from Tamna Police Station reached the spot on Tuesday morning and recovered the bodies after clearing the rubble. The injured were initially taken to Chakaltore Rural Hospital, but as their condition worsened, they were referred to Purulia Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially confirmed.

The incident has raised questions about why the victims were still living in a mud house despite having been allotted permanent housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

Purulia Zila Parishad Chairperson Nivedita Mahato responded to these concerns, saying, “They had been provided with housing under the scheme, but they were not residing there. Instead, they continued to live in a remote area surrounded by forest.”

The local administration has initiated an investigation into

the matter.
