Kolkata, 15 July (H.S.) -

Widespread rainfall has been lashing Kolkata and several other parts of West Bengal since Monday, with heavier showers recorded on Tuesday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the inclement weather to a low-pressure system over the northwestern Bay of Bengal, which has now intensified into a deep depression. Coupled with an active monsoon trough, this weather system is expected to bring continued heavy rain and thunderstorms across the state in the coming days.

According to the IMD, both North and South Bengal districts are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall on Tuesday, accompanied by thunder and lightning. However, districts like Purulia, Bankura, Bardhaman, Birbhum, and Murshidabad are at risk of receiving isolated heavy rainfall. Gusty winds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h may also sweep through several regions.

Northern districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri are expected to witness significant rainfall activity. The IMD has warned that rainfall intensity may further increase towards the end of the week, particularly on July 19 and 20.

In Kolkata, light to moderate showers are likely throughout the day on Tuesday. The deep depression lies just 90 kilometers off the city’s coast, contributing to sudden and frequent weather fluctuations. The maximum temperature in the city is expected to hover around 29 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has issued an advisory warning fishermen not to venture into the sea under any circumstances due to rough conditions. Citizens have also been urged to remain alert and strictly follow weather advisories as further deterioration in weather is expected over the next few days.
