Birbhum SP Summoned Again by NCW in Anubrata Mandal Case; Commission Seeks Further Clarification

Kolkata, 15 July (H.S.) –

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has once again summoned Birbhum Superintendent of Police Amandeep to appear in person at its Delhi headquarters in connection with a controversial phone call made by Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mandal. The SP has been asked to be present on July 23 (Wednesday) at 10:30 AM.

The case pertains to a telephonic conversation in which Mandal allegedly used indecent language while speaking to the officer-in-charge of Bolpur Police Station and made objectionable remarks about his female family members. The NCW had earlier demanded two “action taken reports” from the Birbhum Police but expressed dissatisfaction with the responses received.

According to commission sources, the NCW interrogated SP Amandeep at length on Monday. While some questions were addressed, several key concerns remained unresolved. The NCW has clarified that if SP Amandeep is unable to appear in person, a suitable officer such as the Additional SP of Bolpur, the SDPO, or any officer familiar with the case may attend the hearing on his behalf.

The issue originated from a formal complaint filed by Bolpur OC Liton Haldar, who alleged that Mandal made derogatory comments during the phone call. The commission has raised serious concerns over why the police have not interrogated or detained Mandal despite the gravity of the allegations.

Earlier, SP Amandeep had approached the Calcutta High Court to challenge the NCW’s summons. The court, in an order delivered by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, directed the SP to appear virtually before the NCW on July 14 and submit all relevant documents electronically. The court further stated that the NCW may subsequently fix a date for an in-person appearance by an officer nominated by the SP to respond to remaining queries.

As of now, Birbhum Police and SP Amandeep have not issued any public statement regarding the matter.
