Kolkata, 15 July (H.S.) -
Thirty-four fishermen from Kakdwip in West Bengal have been detained by Bangladeshi authorities for allegedly crossing the international maritime boundary. The incident has triggered deep concern among the families of the detained individuals, who are now anxiously awaiting their return.
According to sources in the Bangladesh Navy, the two trawlers—‘FB Jhar’ and ‘FB Mangalchandi 38’—entered Bangladeshi waters while engaged in deep-sea fishing. The Bangladesh Coast Guard intercepted the vessels, detained the fishermen, and brought them to Mongla Port. The trawlers have since been seized and legal proceedings are reportedly underway under Bangladeshi maritime law.
Taking serious note of the incident, the West Bengal government has initiated diplomatic outreach through the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. Officials from the state’s fisheries department are actively working to secure the early release and safe repatriation of the detained fishermen.
News of the detentions spread rapidly in Kakdwip, leaving many families in distress. “We received a phone call saying they had been picked up by Bangladeshi authorities. We have no idea what will happen next,” said a family member of one of the detained fishermen.
This is not the first time fishermen from Bengal have found themselves in such situations. In the course of deep-sea fishing, crossing unmarked maritime boundaries remains a recurring challenge. State authorities have advised fishermen to exercise greater caution and remain fully aware of international borders while operating at sea.
