Delhi, 13 July (H.S.): Railways has decided to install CCTV cameras in all passenger coaches after positive results from experimental installations. This initiative aims to enhance passenger safety, deterring miscreants and organized gangs that target vulnerable passengers. To maintain passenger privacy, cameras will be placed in common areas near doors. Union Ministers for Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu, reviewed the installation progress on July 12, 2025, with senior Railway Board officials present.

Successful trials have been conducted in Northern Railway's locomotives and coaches, leading to the authorization for installing cameras in 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locos. Each coach will have four dome-type CCTV cameras, two at each entrance, while locomotives will be fitted with six cameras—one at the front, rear, and both sides, along with one dome camera in each cab and two desk-mounted microphones.

The cameras will meet modern specifications and be STQC certified, focusing on high-quality footage even at speeds exceeding 100 km/h and in low-light situations. The Minister urged officials to consider using AI for analyzing captured data. This modernization reflects Indian Railways' commitment to providing a safe, secure, and passenger-friendly travel experience while prioritizing data privacy.
