Flood havoc in West Midnapore's Daspur, man dies after drowning in floodwaters

West Medinipur, 13 July (H.S.) Continuous rainfall and water release from multiple reservoirs have led to flood-like situation in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district. In the Daspur area, the body of a man was recovered from floodwaters on Sunday morning. The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Jharu Jana, a resident of Rajnagar village under the jurisdiction of Daspur Police Station.

On Saturday morning, Jharu Jana had ventured out, wading through floodwaters, to reach the Rajnagar market to withdraw money and buy some essential items. However, he did not return home even as the day passed.

From Saturday afternoon, his relatives and neighbors began searching for him. The distance between his house and the market is around 200 to 300 meters, and due to the flooding, the route had to be traversed through water.

Local residents continued the search throughout Saturday night in the flooded areas. Daspur Police also joined the efforts in nearby localities. On Sunday morning, Jharu’s body was found floating in the water. The police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem.

Daspur and other parts of the Ghatal subdivision remain severely waterlogged. The combination of persistent heavy rains and the release of water from reservoirs has escalated the flood crisis in the region.
