Nagpur, 11 July
(HS): In a tragic accident, a seven-year-old child drowned in an artificial
tank made for immersion of idols. The incident occurred on Thursday near the
Kachhi Visa Ground, under Nagpur’s Lakadganj Police Station.
The tank was
constructed despite opposition from the local residents. Several full-grown trees
were cut for the construction of the tank.
Two children had
gone for a swim in the tank that was filled with rain water. Some
onlookers said that the children entered the tank to fetch the ball they were
playing with. The tank was partially open and had no barricades or warning
signboards.
Among the two,
one of the boys managed to come out safely. Lakadganj Police was informed about
the missing boy. The police and municipal corporation authorities rushed to the
site. The boy, identified as Mahesh Komal Thapa (7), a resident of Maa Uma
Society, was rescued and taken to a hospital. The doctors on examination
declared him dead.
Mother of the
ill-faced Mahesh was inconsolable. His father works as a security guard in an
industrial area.
Tension prevailed
in the area following the death of the child. Police started an investigation into the
incident.
