Delhi, 11 July (H.S.): A two-day offline national workshop titled ‘Best Practices for Teaching English to Deaf Students Using Indian Sign Language (ISL)’ was held by the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC) in New Delhi on July 10-11, 2025. The autonomy of ISLRTC falls under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD). Inaugurated by the Secretary of DEPwD Rajesh Aggarwal, the workshop highlighted the significance of ISL for deaf individuals’ cognitive and academic growth while emphasizing the importance of English language skills for improved career prospects and integration into mainstream society. The integration of technology as a tool for promoting literacy and learning in the deaf community was also advocated.

The workshop featured presentations and interactive sessions from experienced resource persons, including Dr. Sibaji Panda, Sunil Sahasrabudhe, Rajesh Ketkar, Hari Hara Kumar, Sharayu Kadam, Chithra Prasad, and Abbas Ali Behamanesh. Coverage included practical strategies and culturally responsive methodologies for enhancing English literacy using ISL. Participants engaged in discussions to exchange insights and collaborate on improving teaching practices.

The event concluded with a valedictory address by Manmeet Kaur Nanda, with 180 delegates participating from various educational backgrounds, including special and inclusive schools and national institutes.
