Kolkata, 10 July (H.S.) -Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that despite the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, tourism in the Union Territory is steadily recovering. Addressing a tourism conference in Kolkata, Abdullah reassured the public that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the safety of tourists and to boost confidence in the region as a travel destination.

“This has not been an easy year for us. We can divide 2025 into two parts — before the Pahalgam attack and after it. But what we are witnessing now is a resurgence in tourism across Jammu & Kashmir. This is a sign of a new beginning,” he said.

The Chief Minister was referring to the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, most of whom were tourists. The incident had sparked widespread concern regarding safety among prospective visitors.

“We have taken the concerns of tourists seriously and have strengthened security on the ground,” Abdullah stated. “I understand the fear, but I want to assure everyone that every necessary precaution has been taken. Speak to those who have recently returned from Pahalgam — they will tell you how things really are.”

He also noted that the Amarnath Yatra is proceeding smoothly and that the number of direct flights to Jammu & Kashmir has increased in recent weeks. “I came to Kolkata to personally reassure people that Jammu & Kashmir is a safe and attractive tourist destination,” he said.

Expressing gratitude towards the people of West Bengal, Abdullah said, “The people of this state have always stood with Jammu & Kashmir — politically, economically, and emotionally. The bond between us goes beyond time and geography.”

Highlighting the region's diverse offerings, Abdullah said that Jammu & Kashmir provides a unique blend of adventure tourism, destination experiences, and cultural richness. He added that security audits are ongoing in certain areas to ensure a completely safe experience for visitors.
