United Nations, 1 July (H.S.): As Pakistan assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council through alphabetical rotation, India highlighted Islamabad's involvement in cross-border terrorism, referencing the recent Pahalgam massacre by Pak-backed terrorists.

This was in the context of global instability and India's launch of Operation Sindoor following the attack. Before Pakistan's presidency commenced, India organized an exhibition, ‘The Human Cost of Terrorism,’ at the UN, focusing on Pakistan's role in global terrorism, including the protection of Osama bin Laden after the 9/11 attacks.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the need for a global stance against terrorism. In the Council, Pakistan collaborates with China, with occasional support from Russia. However, as president, Pakistan must adhere to established diplomatic protocols when managing discussions and resolutions. The monthly agenda is adopted by consensus, and previous instances of obstruction, such as in 2023, have complicated operations. Pakistan can host high-level events and open debates, with its Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad leading most meetings.

Key Pakistani leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, are expected to participate. Pakistan maintains alignment with Russia and China on various issues, including Iran and the Israel-Hamas conflict. During an emergency session on Iran, Pakistan condemned US and Israeli actions. While advocating for Palestine in the Israel-Hamas conflict, Pakistan struggles to connect its plight to Kashmir effectively. Pakistan has held a non-permanent seat on the Council since January, representing the Asia Pacific region.
