Delhi, 7 June (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India has implemented a tsunami warning system benefiting 29 countries and emphasized key global priorities for enhancing disaster resilience. He highlighted the importance of “strengthening early warning systems and coordination.” During the International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (ICDRI)-2025 held via videoconferencing, he thanked France for hosting the event and acknowledged Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh's attendance at the United Nations Oceans Conference.

Modi addressed the vulnerabilities of coastal regions to climate change and recent disasters, including Cyclone Remal, Hurricane Beryl, and others, stressing the significant damage they caused, which underscored the need for resilient infrastructure. He shared India's experiences with past disasters and highlighted the construction of cyclone shelters and the tsunami warning system as crucial steps toward building resilience.

He noted the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure’s (CDRI) initiatives with 25 Small Island Developing States to create resilient infrastructure, including homes, hospitals, and early warning systems. Modi reaffirmed the importance of a global digital repository to share best practices and learning from nations that have successfully rebuilt after disasters, promoting education in disaster resilience through skill development programs.

Moreover, he emphasized recognizing Small Island Developing States as Large Ocean Countries and the special attention required for their vulnerabilities. Lastly, he called for infrastructure resilient to disasters and urged a collective global effort to secure a disaster-resilient future, underscoring that effective early warning systems are essential for timely decision-making and communication at local levels.
