Hooghly, 7 June (H.S.): 50-year-old Surinder Sahni , who saved many people from drowning in the Ganga river, himself drowned in the Ganga river on Saturday. As per information, Surinder Sahni, a resident of Bara Bazar area of Chuchura in Hooghly district, used to run in the field every day. After he used to swim and bathe in the Ganga at the old launch ghat. Like every day, on Saturday also, after running in the field, Surinder went into the Ganga river to swim and bathe and suddenly drowned. On information, Chuchura MLA Asit Majumdar and Chuchura resident and Saptagram MLA Tapan Dasgupta reached the Ganga Ghat. The police from Chuchura police station also reached the spot. Disaster Management Force was also called to search for him.
Tapan Dasgupta told that Surinder had earlier saved many people from drowning in the Ganga. On this day, while bathing, his health deteriorated and he drowned. Asit Majumdar said, 'If the person who saved many from drowning, drowns in the river himself, then it is nothing but destiny.'
Surinder's brother Birendra Sahni said, 'Brother knew swimming very well. He used to bathe in the Ganga every day. Today he went to bathe and then drowned.' Chuchura Ward No. 21 councillor Mita Chatterjee said that Surinder's daughter's wedding is in November and they had booked a lodge yesterday. There is mourning in the area due to this incident.
