Chennai, 7 June (H.S.) : The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to close down approximately 70% of the micro composting centres in the city. This decision is part of the GCC's efforts to revamp waste management practices and optimize resources. The micro composting centres to be shut down and is working on a plan to relocate or retrain staff.
The micro composting centres were initially set up to manage organic waste at the community level. However, the GCC has observed that many of these centres are not functioning efficiently, leading to underutilization of resources.
The GCC is expected to focus on larger, more efficient composting facilities to process organic waste. This move aims to streamline waste management processes and improve overall environmental sustainability in Chennai.
The GCC has begun the process of identifying the specific micro composting centres to be shut down and is working on a plan to relocate or retrain staff. The corporation is also exploring alternative waste management strategies to ensure a seamless transition.
