New Delhi, June 7(HS): World Food Safety Day is celebrated globally today, emphasizing the importance of safe and clean food in preventing foodborne illnesses. Union Health Minister JP Nadda highlighted that food is essential for daily life, and ensuring its safety is vital for health and family well-being.
The 2023 theme, Food Safety: Science in Action, showcases the role of science and technology in food safety. Established on June 7, 2019, by the United Nations General Assembly, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization, this day aims to raise awareness about food safety and its impact on health, hunger, and agriculture. Food safety is a public right, as contaminated food can lead to various diseases and significant fatalities. The World Health Organization notes that around 6 million people become ill annually from contaminated food, causing approximately 420,000 deaths.
