Maldah, 7 June (H.S.): At Maradangi village of Harishchandrapur in Maldah district, a youth attacked an elderly man with a sharp knife on his neck while he was offering Eid namaz on Saturday. The accused has been arrested. The elderly man is undergoing treatment in a critical condition in the hospital. The police of Harishchandrapur police station has initiated an investigation into matter. According to police sources, the name of the injured elderly man is Jalil Sheikh (65). He was a resident of Maradangi village. The name of the accused youth is Babul Ali (30). According to local sources, a dispute started about six months ago with the family of neighbor Babul over throwing stones at the elderly man's house. Since then, the accused Babul and his family members were angry.

On this day, the accused youth, his father and three other brothers were offering namaz next to the elderly man. Allegedly, the youth attacked the elderly man's neck with a knife while offering namaz. The local people first caught the accused. The old man was taken to Harishchandrapur Rural Hospital, from where the doctors referred him to Chanchal Super Specialty Hospital in a critical condition. He is battling for life there. After the incident, the accused's family has fled from home. The injured old man's wife Hazra Bibi said, Babul had planned to kill my husband. His family members are also involved in this incident. We demand strict punishment for them. We have lodged a complaint at the police station. Harishchandrapur Police Station IC Manojit Sarkar said, The complaint has been lodged. The main accused has been arrested. The rest of the accused are being searched.
