Delhi, 7 June (H.S.): British Foreign Secretary David Lammy will visit India for two days starting Saturday to discuss trade, defence, and security ties. He will engage in talks with Indian counterpart S Jaishankar and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.
This visit follows the recent finalization of a free trade agreement (FTA) aimed at exempting 99% of Indian exports from tariffs and simplifying the export process for British goods like whisky and cars. The FTA, concluded on May 6, is the largest the UK has made since leaving the EU and includes a double taxation convention.
Additionally, the Indian side is likely to address cross-border terrorism from Pakistan, with the UK previously engaging with both nations to reduce tensions. Lammy had previously visited Islamabad, endorsing a May 10 agreement between India and Pakistan to halt military actions.
