Kolkata, 05 June (H.S.): Political circles witnessed heightened activity on Thursday afternoon when senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anubrata Mondal arrived at the office of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) in Bolpur in a black SUV. He reached the premises around 3:35 PM, triggering a security alert that saw the area sealed off and guarded by the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and other security units.
Mondal is under investigation for allegedly threatening Bolpur’s then-In-Charge officer, Litan Haldar, using abusive and intimidating language over a phone call. The police had issued multiple summons to Mondal in connection with the case. However, he repeatedly skipped appearances, citing health issues, which led to mounting criticism from opposition parties and calls for his arrest.
Amid the growing political pressure, his surprise appearance today is being viewed as a major development. The SDPO office had been fortified in anticipation, and tight security arrangements were in place to prevent any untoward incident.
The questioning of Anubrata Mondal is currently underway, and sources suggest that further legal steps are being evaluated based on his responses. The FIR filed against him includes two non-bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code, raising speculation about whether the police will proceed with an arrest or release him post-interrogation.
In a surprising twist, the investigation has also reportedly targeted Litan Haldar—the very officer who received the alleged threats from Mondal. Police have begun examining his role in the matter and have seized his mobile phone as part of the inquiry.
This case has once again drawn attention to the intersection of politics and policing in West Bengal, with both state authorities and political observers closely watching how the situation unfolds.
