Sundarban, 5 June (H.S.)

On World Environment Day, Sundarban's Kingfisher got a place on the postcard. The 'Kingfisher of Sundarban' postcard was released on Thursday afternoon in collaboration with the Indian Postal Department. The postcard inauguration ceremony was held at Sajnekhali on the initiative of Sundarban Tiger Project. West Bengal Forest Minister Birbaha Hansda, Chief Forester (Wildlife) Dewal Roy, Chief Postmaster of West Bengal Circle Ashok Kumar and other officials of Sundarban Tiger Project were present on the occasion.

The State Forest Department has taken this initiative to give the message of saving Sundarban on World Environment Day. Sundarban is not just a forest area, it is a natural fortress against cyclones and also an important carbon dioxide absorber. Sundarban is one of the sources of human respiration. Sundarban is also a shelter for countless marine species as well as the Royal Bengal Tiger. However, apart from these, one of the most important symbols of Sundarban is the kingfisher. According to ornithologists, a maximum of eight to nine species of kingfisher can be seen in Sundarban. Therefore, the forest department has given importance to the kingfisher as a symbol of Sundarbans on World Environment Day. Debal Roy said, The presence of this bird conveys many things. It is a biological indicator. Along with the good health of mangroves, this kingfisher conveys the quality of water and the presence of abundant fish in Sundarbans. The Forest Minister said, Sundarbans has become a safe haven for wildlife. And this is the reason why the number of tigers is increasing day by day. Apart from this, the maximum number of kingfishers are seen in Sundarbans. It is our responsibility and duty to protect Sundarbans. If Sundarban survives, we all will survive. Let this be our resolution on World Environment Day. Ashok Kumar said, We are happy that the Indian Postal Department could join in spreading the message of saving Sundarbans.
