Bengaluru, June 5(HS): A tragic incident occurred before the welcome ceremony for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), which had won the IPL 2025 title. On Wednesday, 11 people died and 33 were injured in a stampede outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium due to a large crowd. The RCB franchise expressed deep sorrow and condolences for the affected families, emphasizing their commitment to safety.
We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings across Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of the utmost importance to us, RCB said in a statement. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our programme and followed the guidance and advice of the local administration, the statement added.
The KSCA, which is facing criticism over the organisation of the event, announced a compensation of 5 lakh for each of the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede. Thousands had gathered for an open bus parade and honor ceremony to celebrate the team’s first IPL title when the crowd became uncontrollable, leading to the disaster.The RCB franchise promptly shortened the event and complied with local authorities’ directives after learning of the incident.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed the deaths and injuries and announced a compensation of 10 lakh rupees for the victims' families.
