Nabadwip, 5 June (H.S.): There are heaps of garbage at various places on the roadside in the international tourist center Mayapur. The garbage has not been cleaned on the roads of Mayapur for a long time. Foul smell is spreading everywhere. Despite repeatedly informing the Panchayat, there was no benefit. Local residents are angry. Thousands of pilgrims and tourists coming to Mayapur are getting upset by passing by this garbage every day.

Garbage is lying at various places on the roadside in Mayapur-Bamunpukur-2 number Panchayat area. A section of people are throwing garbage by filling it in big plastic bags on the roadside in Mayapur. Some people are throwing everything, from empty water bottles to leftover food from various hotels and food shops. The rotten food left in the garbage heap is spreading foul smell all around. Allegedly, the Panchayat is very indifferent in this regard and is not taking any action. Jagannath Dev's Snan Yatra and Rath Yatra are coming up. Thousands of pilgrims and tourists will visit Mayapur for this festival. However, the Panchayat had said that a warning board will be put up prohibiting garbage dumping in the area. But, local residents alleged that the Panchayat has not put up that warning board till date. There is a private school near the Mayapur ISKCON temple under this Panchayat. The school has appealed to the students not to throw garbage. Still, garbage is being dumped every day in the dark of the night.

Mamta Sultana, a ninth grade student of Dongapada in Mayapur, said, 'I go to Navadwip Girls School from this road every day. I have to pass through dirty garbage. I have to cover my nose with a handkerchief while going. Rajesh Debnath, a resident of Swarupganj, said, I cross the Jalangi river and go to Mayapur Hospital Square for home tuition. I have to pass by that garbage heap. Many times dogs and cats drag the garbage from the heap onto the road. Toto driver Manab Das, a local resident of Hulorghat, said, There are no dustbins on the roads of Mayapur. Therefore, many people are throwing plastic packets and empty bottles on the roads due to lack of space. Gour Das had come with his family from Birbhum to visit Nabadwip and Mayapur. He said, the kind of dirty garbage lying in a place like Mayapur is not seen anywhere else. Local panchayat member Swapan Mandal said, some hoteliers are throwing garbage on the road in the dark of night. The panchayat should think about removing them. Maitreyi Ghosh, head of the Trinamool-run Mayapur-Bamunpukur-No. 2 Panchayat, said, We had cleaned it earlier also. The panchayat will clean the place again.
