Washington, June 4 (H.S.): A 33-year-old Chinese scientist, Yunqing Jian, has been arrested in the U.S. for allegedly trafficking a toxic fungus known as 'Fusarium graminearum,' which poses a significant threat to crops and human health. FBI Director Kash Patel has labeled Jian a 'terrorism agent,' emphasizing that her actions are comparable to a terrorist attack on agriculture. The fungus causes 'head blight' in key crops like wheat, barley, corn, and rice, leading to substantial economic losses globally. Reports suggest Jian has ties to the Chinese Communist Party and received funding from the Chinese government for her activities related to this fungus.
Jian's male friend, Junyong Liu, also a Chinese scientist, is being sought by the FBI for similar charges, including conspiracy and trafficking. Liu allegedly lied about his involvement before confessing to trafficking the fungus to conduct research at the University of Michigan. FBI investigations include reviewing WeChat messages between the two from 2022 discussing dangerous seed trafficking.
Federal indictments are sealed, but both Jian and Liu face serious allegations, including false statements and visa fraud. Jian, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan, will remain in custody following a court hearing. The FBI's Counter Intelligence Division is investigating, with U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon stating that the actions of these individuals are a significant national security concern. The University of Michigan has condemned Jian's actions and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
