New Delhi, June 04 (H.S.): The Supreme Court has refused to hear a petition seeking to stop the burning of hazardous waste from Union Carbide in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh. The vacation bench headed by Justice Sanjay Karol stated that this petition will be heard after the summer vacation. The Supreme Court had also declined to intervene in the Madhya Pradesh High Court's order on February 27. The petition claims that the local residents were not consulted regarding the burning of Union Carbide's waste. The petition raises concerns that if this waste is burned in Pithampur, the residents may face radiation hazards. If radiation spreads, there are no medical facilities available in the area for those affected.

Toxic methyl isocyanate gas leaked from the Union Carbide factory in the midnight hours of December 2 and 3, 1984, leading to the deaths of over three thousand people and affecting more than one lakh individuals. On December 3, 2024, the Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered the transportation of Union Carbide's waste from Bhopal to the disposal site.
