NH-16 Turns Into a Death Trap: 22 Black Spots Identified on 39-km Stretch, Authorities Alarmed

Howrah, 3 June (H.S.): A 39-kilometre stretch of National Highway 16—from Ranihati Kali Mandir to Naupala (Kolaghat Sarat Setu)—has become increasingly perilous for motorists and pedestrians alike, with authorities identifying 22 black spots along the route. These accident-prone zones are being cited as major contributors to a surge in fatal road mishaps.

According to police data, 163 people lost their lives on this stretch in 2024, and over 50 fatalities have already been recorded in the first five months of 2025, along with hundreds of injuries. Key infrastructural deficiencies—including the lack of foot overbridges and service roads—are being blamed for the spike in accidents.

Despite efforts by Howrah Rural Police, which include traffic monitoring, night patrolling, and public awareness campaigns, the situation remains grim due to widespread violation of traffic rules.

Superintendent of Police (Howrah Rural), Subimal Pal, stated, “We are doing everything we can—intensive traffic patrolling, helmet enforcement, and penalizing rule violators. But unless citizens themselves start following traffic laws, reducing these accidents will remain a challenge.”

Adding to the concern, National Highway Authority site engineer Saurabh Sinha revealed that proposed infrastructure improvements like flyovers and underpasses are being delayed due to land acquisition issues and legal complexities. Meetings with the administration are underway to find viable solutions.
