Kolkata, 3 June (H.S.): The Assam government has lodged a criminal case against Kolkata resident Wazahat Khan Qadri Rashidi for allegedly making derogatory and offensive remarks against Hindu deities, specifically targeting Goddess Kamakhya — a revered deity central to Assam’s religious and cultural heritage.

Reacting strongly to the matter, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Monday that the accused’s comments not only hurt religious sentiments but also have the potential to incite communal unrest. “In light of the gravity of the incident, Assam Police has promptly registered a case,” Sarma confirmed.

Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister revealed that Assam has formally requested the West Bengal government to hand over the accused to face judicial proceedings in the state. “We have asked for full cooperation from the West Bengal government to ensure that the accused is brought to Assam. We will wait to see their response,” he added.

Later, in a public post on X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma reiterated his position: “In response to the unacceptable and offensive comments made against Goddess Kamakhya, a case has been registered, and we are actively working with the West Bengal government to bring the accused to Assam.”

The controversy erupted after a series of social media posts by Rashidi allegedly containing derogatory remarks about Hindu gods and goddesses surfaced. These posts were widely circulated, sparking outrage among the general public.

Notably, Rashidi had earlier filed a complaint against law student and social media influencer Sharmistha Panuly for allegedly making anti-Islamic comments. That case resulted in Panuly’s arrest and her subsequent 14-day judicial custody by the Kolkata Police.

In a dramatic turn of events, Rashidi now finds himself facing legal action for allegedly insulting a prominent deity, raising concerns about religious harmony. Assam Police has confirmed that investigations are ongoing and has expressed hope that the West Bengal authorities will cooperate in handing over the accused for further legal proceedings.
