ZANSKAR ARCHERY COMPETITION ORGANISED IN HONOUR OF KARGIL WAR BRAVEHEARTS


Leh, 28 June (H.S.): In a spirited tribute to the heroes of the Kargil War (OPERATION VIJAY), the Indian Army, in collaboration with local administrative and sports bodies, successfully organised the Zanskar Archery Competition from 25 to 27 June 2025 at Padum in the picturesque Zanskar Valley. The event served a dual purpose for honouring the valour of India’s gallant soldiers and fostering unity, harmony, and sportsmanship amongst the youth of Ladakh.

Archers from the two distinct valleys of Suru and Zanskar came together in the true spirit of camaraderie and competition, showcasing their skills in Modern Bow Archery across individual and team events. The Tournament was designed to promote regional integration and bring together communities through the medium of sports. The competition commenced with qualification rounds on 25 June, followed by Quarterfinals on 26 June, culminating in intense Semifinals and Finals on 27 June. The spirited contests drew enthusiastic crowd, with local residents, tourists and school children cheering on their respective valley teams.

The Closing Ceremony witnessed distribution of trophies and medals to the winners of both teams and individual events. The title of Best Archer was awarded a Modern Bow recognising excellence and encouraging continued pursuit of the sport. In addition to trophies and medals, cash prizes were also awarded to winners of both individual and team events. The first, second and third prize winners in the individual category received Rs 7,500, Rs 5,000, and Rs 3,000 respectively, while the team winners were awarded Rs 10,000, Rs 7,500, and Rs 5,000 respectively. As a gesture of encouragement, consolation prizes were also distributed to 20 participants, ensuring wide recognition of talent and effort across the board.

The occasion was further graced by ‘District Authorities’, Ex Servicemen and Indian Army personnel, all of whom acknowledged the enthusiasm and participation of the youth. The event was lauded by the local population, especially the younger generation, who expressed heartfelt gratitude for the conduct of such an initiative in their region. Many youths noted that the competition instilled in them a renewed sense of pride and purpose, while also offering a platform to showcase their traditional and modern sporting talent.

Through this initiative, the Indian Army reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the social fabric of the region, promoting youth engagement, and preserving the legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Kargil War.
