Chennai, 26 June (H.S.) : A 40-year-old man died under mysterious circumstances after allegedly being harassed by police at Thiruvanmiyur beach in Chennai. The incident occurred when the victim, Shanmugam, was playing cards with friends near the beach on Tuesday evening.
Police personnel allegedly intervened, demanding that they vacate the area, and took Shanmugam and his friends to the Kottivakkam police station for questioning.
According to reports, Shanmugam became unwell while at the police station and was later taken to a private hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Shanmugam's family claims that he was subjected to physical assault by the police, leading to his death. The family has demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and action against the police personnel involved.
The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Shanmugam's death. Further probe is underway to determine the exact cause of death and to ascertain whether there is any truth to the allegations of police misconduct.
