Leeds, June 25 (H.S.): After losing a massive target of 371 runs to England in the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Indian captain Shubman Gill expressed disappointment over the mistakes made in batting and fielding. Gill mentioned that the team's plan was to set England a target of 430-435 runs, but the consistent failure of the lower order limited India to just 364 runs.

Gill said after the match on Tuesday, Our plan was to declare by setting a target of around 430-435. But our last six wickets could only add 31 runs, which certainly wasn't good for us.

In the first innings, India lost their last seven wickets for just 41 runs, while in the second innings, six wickets fell for only 31 runs. Gill noted that the team is working on rectifying this weakness.

Gill stated, Yes, we did discuss this, but when you are on the field, everything happens very quickly. We need to avoid such collapses and improve our fielding.

During the match, India dropped a total of seven catches, two of which were in the final innings. Among them was Ben Duckett, who was given two lifelines and scored a match-winning innings of 149 runs off 170 balls.

Gill said, Opportunities on such wickets do not come often, and we dropped several catches. But our team is young and in the learning process. Hopefully, we will improve in the next matches.

Regarding bowling, Ravindra Jadeja did find some rough on the fifth day, but he could only take one wicket – that of Ben Stokes. Jadeja conceded 104 runs in 24 overs while taking one wicket. Duckett targeted him well with reverse sweeps, scoring 38 runs off 38 balls against him. Gill defended Jadeja's performance and said, He bowled brilliantly. He created opportunities for us; there were some catches that Rishabh did not see. But that's cricket. Sometimes opportunities do not go your way.

India is now trailing 0-1 in the series and faces the challenge of making a comeback in the remaining four Test matches.
