Guwahati, 24 June (HS): Rupam Asom alias Kant Bora, a Brigadier level self styled leader of the banned organization United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) [ULFA (I)] has been formally taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He was arrested by the Tinsukia police a few days ago.

According to the sources, Rupam Asom is being intensively interrogated at the NIA office in Sonapur for the last three days. He is an important character in the ongoing investigations in many serious incidents like murder, kidnapping and armed rebellion.

The NIA has previously registered several cases against him, which are part of the action on the militant network active in the Northeast. The agency has now reactivated old pending cases after getting his custody.

Security agencies believe that the interrogation of Rupam Asom can provide important information about the internal structure, recruitment mechanism and international contacts of ULFA (I).

However, the NIA has not yet disclosed under which specific sections they will be produced in court. Further important revelations are likely to be made in this case.
