Bhubaneswar, 24 June (H.S.): The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has responded to the controversy surrounding the alleged disappearance of sacred ‘amuniya modaks’ from the Puri Jagannath Temple’s secure storehouse, stating that initial allegations are not supported by verified facts.
Breaking his silence on the issue, SJTA Chief Administrator Dr. Arabinda Padhee addressed the media on Tuesday, following a written complaint by servitor Haldhar Dasmahapatra. The complaint, which alleged the theft of 70 ‘amuniya modaks’ from the ‘garada ghara’ on June 21, before they could be offered to Lord Jagannath, had triggered public outcry and intense media scrutiny.
Dr. Padhee stated, “The claims made by the Badagrahi are not based on conclusive or verified evidence. The matter is sensitive and requires a detailed and objective investigation.” He further confirmed that the temple administration is in the process of reviewing CCTV footage and scrutinizing records to ascertain whether any irregularities occurred.
Reiterating the administration’s commitment to upholding ritual sanctity and transparency, he assured that, “If any wrongdoing is found, strict action will be taken in accordance with the temple’s rules and protocols.”
The SJTA Chief also expressed concern over public discussions about confidential temple rituals. “It is not appropriate to discuss secret ritual procedures in the public domain. We urge servitors and all stakeholders to exercise restraint and maintain the dignity of the temple’s sacred traditions,” he said.
Responding to unverified claims regarding the possible transport or sale of modaks outside Puri, including in places like Digha, Dr. Padhee said, “A detailed inquiry will be initiated into all such allegations, and a report will be sought. Any individual found guilty will face appropriate consequences.”
While the administration has adopted a cautious and procedural approach, growing demands from servitor communities, devotees, and cultural observers underscore the need for a swift and transparent resolution. The episode has sparked wider concerns about ritual discipline, administrative vigilance, and communication gaps within one of India’s most revered temples.
As the investigation progresses, public attention remains firmly on the SJTA’s ability to protect the sanctity of Lord Jagannath’s rituals and uphold the trust of millions of devotees across the world.
