Kolkata, 2 June (H.S.) — Tension gripped the Durgapur Sub-Divisional Hospital late Sunday night after a group of youths allegedly vandalized the hospital's emergency ward. The Bidhannagar police have arrested six individuals in connection with the incident, while efforts are ongoing to trace the others involved.
According to hospital authorities, the disturbance began around 11:30 p.m. when a youth injured in a motorcycle accident was brought in for treatment. He was accompanied by 17 friends, who claimed to be there in support. After preliminary medical aid, the patient was sent to another room for an injection.
Trouble reportedly escalated when the group attempted to forcibly enter the injection room en masse. Security personnel intervened to prevent them, leading to a violent altercation. Members of the group allegedly began damaging hospital property and physically assaulted hospital manager Mohan Murmu.
Murmu later stated, We are facing a severe lack of security. The chaos and destruction continued from around 11:30 p.m. until almost 2:30 a.m. Under such conditions, it is extremely difficult to carry out our duties.
He also claimed that the individuals involved appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Hospital authorities immediately informed the local police, who arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. The arrests were made shortly thereafter.
Following the incident, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff at the hospital have expressed fear and concern over their safety. They have called for urgent improvements to the hospital’s security infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.
