Kolkata, 2 June (H.S.) — A late-night scooter training session turned tragic for an 18-year-old girl in Kolkata’s Rajarhat-New Town area on Sunday. The victim, identified as Pooja Saha, died after losing control of the scooter she was learning to ride, leading to a fatal accident.
Pooja, a resident of Dashdron in Ward No. 5 under the Bidhannagar Municipality, had recently passed her higher secondary examinations. According to her family, she had been insisting on learning to ride a scooter for several days. On Sunday night, her boyfriend, Subhankar Bhowmik, took her to a relatively deserted road in Rajarhat to teach her.
Sources said that both Pooja and Subhankar were not wearing helmets at the time of the incident. Pooja was riding the scooter while Subhankar was seated behind her. As they passed through the Majher-IT Road area, Pooja reportedly lost control of the two-wheeler, and both fell onto the road. Pooja sustained severe head injuries in the fall.
She was immediately rushed to a private hospital after her family was informed. However, doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and launched an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that a sudden increase in speed led to a loss of control. CCTV footage from the area confirms that the scooter skidded before the accident occurred.
The tragic death has left the Dashdron locality in deep shock. Neighbors described Pooja as a bright and promising student, and her untimely demise has cast a pall of gloom over the community.
