Delhi, 2 June (H.S.): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports regarding local opposition to a proposed dam in Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh, due to fears of displacement and negative impacts on livelihood and ecology. To manage the situation, the government has deployed central armed forces. The NHRC considers the report's claims serious enough to warrant concern for human rights violations, issuing notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police for detailed reports within two weeks. On May 23, 2025, a protest against the dam construction, led by a human rights activist, involved about 400 participants.
