Hooghly, 2 June (H.S.):
Kalyan Banerjee appeared in Serampore POCSO court on Monday in connection with the Kanaipur rape and murder case and demanded capital punishment for the accused. The POCSO court judge ordered the accused Asim Majumdar to be sent to 10-day police custody. During the question-answer session, Kalyan Banerjee said, The mentally deranged accused raped and murdered the minor by luring her with a biscuit worth ₹5. That's why I want him to be hanged. Today, Kalyan also raised the issue of RG Kar movement. He said, There have been many movements after the RG Kar incident. They were not seen in villages or districts. Even junior doctors were not seen. But we are here, the government is here. The accused should get maximum punishment.
Notably, the Trinamool MP from Serampore had gone to the victim's house in Kanaipur on Saturday evening. Seeing the MP, the minor's grandmother and sister burst into tears. Kalyan Banerjee assured them that the government is with them. They will be given all kinds of help. The government will fight to get the accused hanged in the legal way. MP Kalyan Banerjee met the family and told them, The Chief Minister has sent me. The government is with the family. Arrangements will be made to ensure that the accused gets the maximum punishment. Because this is a rarest of rare incident. This is a very cruel incident. It is unimaginable that a young man would kill a girl like this. Criminals mingle in the society and commit such heinous crimes. We have to fight against them. I had said the same thing while filing the petition.
