Chennai, 19 June (H.S.): The QS World University Rankings 2026 have been released, and IIT Madras has made a significant leap, securing the 180th spot globally. This marks a remarkable jump of 47 ranks from its previous position of 227 in 2025. IIT Madras is now ranked third among Indian institutions, following IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay, which secured the 123rd and 129th ranks globally, respectively.
IIT Delhi has surpassed IIT Bombay to become India's top-ranked institution, with a global rank of 123. The institute has climbed more than 70 places in two years, showcasing outstanding results in Employer Reputation, Citations, Sustainability, and Academic Reputation. IIT Bombay, on the other hand, slipped 11 spots to 129th globally.
The QS World University Rankings 2026 are based on multiple performance indicators, including academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, research impact, international student diversity, and graduate employability. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has retained its top position globally for the 14th consecutive year.
India's Performance in QS World University Rankings 2026 in 54 institutions featured in the rankings, making it the fourth most represented country. The top-performing institutions in India are: IIT Delhi: Ranked 123 globally, with an overall score of 65.5;
IIT Bombay: Ranked 129 globally, with an overall score of 64.8 ; IIT Madras: Ranked 180 globally, with an overall score of 58.4 ; IIT Kharagpur: Ranked 215 globally, with an overall score of 54.5 ; IISc Bangalore: Ranked 219 globally with an overall score of 54.2
The rankings highlight the growing prominence of Indian institutions globally, with several IITs and other universities showcasing significant improvements in their rankings.
