Chennai, 17 June (H.S.) : Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, made a strong appeal for national unity, emphasizing that India, as a rapidly rising global power, cannot afford to be divided on the issue of languages. Speaking at Pondicherry University, Dhankhar urged citizens to embrace the nation's rich linguistic diversity as a strength rather than a source of discord, calling on the youth to move past linguistic disputes and focus on collective national growth and harmony.
Highlighting India's unique linguistic heritage, the Vice President noted that the country is home to eleven officially recognized classical languages, including Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Odia. He pointed out that the Indian Parliament allows members to speak in 22 languages, which he described as a testament to the nation's inclusive governance and a reflection of its respect for every culture and identity within its borders.
Dhankhar also used the platform to advocate for the full implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, referring to it as a game-changer for India's academic landscape. He encouraged states that have not yet fully adopted the policy to do so, emphasizing its flexible, student-focused approach and its importance to both skills and values.
He further cautioned against a confrontational attitude on sensitive subjects like language and education, stating that political confrontation over such issues only derails progress and works against the ideals enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
